About 10+ Textiles

Ten Plus Textiles was formed in 1991 by ten textile artists based in the North West who wanted to work together and promote an appreciation of embroidery in all its forms. Since then the group has grown in number to fifteen.

Members have developed their own individual styles, using a range of techniques, but all have the common aim of working with fibres and fabric to promote a greater appreciation of contemporary textile art. From fine hand and machine embroidery, patchwork, quilting and beadwork, to weaving, hand-made felt and paper, collage and mixed media, the members create work that demonstrates both the aesthetics of modern design and the unique surface qualities of the decorative stitch. Their work is rich, luxurious and ornate in texture and colour and represents a fusion of traditional textile methods with original and inventive ideas and creations.

As the expertise of the group continues to cover an increasingly wide range of disciplines, the group members feel that this diversity is their strength. What unifies them, however, is a fascination for the language of colour and texture, and the myriad of ways in which these can be used to communicate moods and ideas. Their work includes framed pieces and hangings, three dimensional items, fashion accessories and jewellery
.
Ten Plus Textiles aims to exhibit twice a year and in the 22 years since its formation the group has exhibited in a wide range of venues, largely in the North West. These include the Museum & Art Gallery and Ordsall Hall at Salford, The Pankhurst Centre, Manchester, The Platform Gallery, Clitheroe, and Bankfield Museum, Halifax. It has also taken part in larger exhibitions at the Madeira Show in Harrogate and the Piece Hall Gallery, Halifax.  To celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2011, it was invited to have a stand at The Knitting & Stitching Show in London, Harrogate and Dublin.
The Group has taken part in “Cotton Connections” at the Science Museum, Manchester, shown work and given demonstrations at Little Moreton Hall. Most recently, Ten Plus has worked with young people at North Salford Youth Centre making sculptural pieces.

Individual members of the group have had work selected for the Anchor Award for European Design, the Embroiderers’ Guild Members’ Exhibitions (at the Collins Gallery, Glasgow, the Herbert Gallery, Coventry and the Bilston Craft Gallery, Wolverhampton), and Embroidery 2000 in Auckland, New Zealand.  Work has also been selected for the Sale Waterside and Platform Gallery Open Exhibitions.
